The Correct Rim Weight
The first thing you must remember is the car was designed with a certain weight load capacity for its suspension. When you buy a set of dirt cheap rims for your car, try to make sure the weight of the rim matches as closely as possible to the manufacturer's rim weight. When you add the extra weight you could be giving up the better handling your car's suspension was designed for. This is important to remember when you change the rims, as well. Your car may not handle the same with the new rims and new tires.
You may have to get new tires if you buy a larger rim. The larger inner diameter could improve your car's handling capabilities. You will definitely see the car is better capable of holding the road. Yet the inner dimensions being bigger will mean you have to buy new tires. You can still have the same outside diameter. When you change the rims and tires always have your speedometer recalculated to make sure it is reading accurately. Sometimes changing rim and tire size can throw it off a bit.
Load Rating
Two other things you need to check when you are buying dirt cheap rims is the maximum load rating and bolt pattern. You want to make sure your new wheels match the load rating of your vehicle. Smaller load ratings can cause tire mishaps. This is not a good thing. As for the bolt pattern, if it does not match up you are just wasting your money. Typically you should also retorque your lug nuts once you have been on the road for a while. The first time is 25 miles, and then every 100 miles until you know the torque is maintaining itself.
Forged Magnesium Vs Aluminum
The material your dirt cheap rims are made of is extremely important. Although aluminum is cheap, the rims can bend. They can also be heavy. Going even two inches larger can add a significant amount of weight. For a lighter rim you could choose forged magnesium. These are sometimes the strongest rims you can buy.
Checking For Clearance
When you go to a wider wheel than is currently on your vehicle the offset is important. You want to measure before buying to make sure the new wheel package you buy will fit. Not only do you need to measure for fender clearance, but you also need to make sure the tie rod is clear, the calipers will not be impeded, and the shocks and shock mounts are clear. Any one of these parts coming in contact with the new wheels can cause problems.
